Sierra Leone’s coastal communities showcase tradition, resilience, and tourism potentia
Sixteen coastal communities in Sierra Leone came together for the Coastal Unity Boat Race in Freetown, turning the shoreline into a lively celebration of speed, skill, and culture. Handmade boats, crafted with traditional techniques, carried teams competing not only for bragging rights but also to highlight how coastal residents are balancing survival with climate pressures and the promise of tourism.
Organizers say the race is more than sport — it’s a way to preserve heritage, attract investment, and strengthen community identity. “We know there’s a vast resource out there in the ocean,” said Walton Ekundayo Gilpin of the GEED Foundation, noting that showcasing these communities could boost GDP growth.
Tourism Minister Nabeela Tunis praised the event for raising Sierra Leone’s profile and creating opportunities for coastal residents. For locals, the race is proof that even amid rising seas and economic challenges, tradition and resilience remain at the heart of community life.
