Turkish president hails ties with Washington, saying defence has traditionally been one of the strongest areas of Türkiye-US partnership and that Ankara is ready to advance cooperation in other areas, such as nuclear energy and civil aviation.
Türkiye and the US must "gain new momentum" in their relations by leaving behind barriers between them, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.
"We want to gain new momentum by leaving behind the barriers that should never have existed between the two allies in the first place," Erdogan said at an event in New York.
"Advancing the defence industry, traditionally one of the strongest areas of our Türkiye-US partnership, both bilaterally and within NATO is essential," he said.
"We are ready to advance the cooperation we have established with the US in areas such as nuclear, energy including LNG, civil aviation and high technology," he added.
"Deepening our cooperation with the United States in a multidimensional manner, including opportunities for joint production, will be in our mutual interest," he said.
Erdogan said Turkish companies have reached a level that enables them to invest in the US, expressing confidence that Türkiye will soon rank among the world's top 10 defence exporters.
"I hope that the strong ties and alliance between Türkiye and the United States will grow even stronger in the second century of our diplomatic relations," he said.
Erdogan also said Türkiye has maintained and strengthened its position as an "island of stability" despite the crises and conflicts surrounding it.
'Voice of the oppressed'
Erdogan will address the UN General Assembly on Tuesday for the 16th time.
Earlier, Presidential Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said the voice of Türkiye and the voice of conscience would once again be heard from the UN podium.
"Our President will once again speak out for justice in an address that will make our nation proud, and he will be the voice of the oppressed, those whose voices go unheard, and those awaiting justice," Duran said in a post on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.
"He will carry the call for justice—from Gaza to the oppressed around the world—to the shared conscience of humanity. Because the world deserves a more just order in which justice, the rule of law, and the voice of humanity are decisive. For a more just world, Erdogan is the voice of justice!"
