Nigerian forces stop overnight assault; no civilians hurt
Suspected Boko Haram militants launched an overnight attack on a military post in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, in the Ajilari Cross district, just a few kilometres from the airport.
Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso said the attackers were quickly repelled by security forces, who were already on heightened alert. Residents reported hearing sporadic gunfire and explosions, but no civilian or military casualties occurred. Four attackers were reportedly killed.
A similar attempted attack occurred in Damboa. Emergency officials confirmed that both incidents were controlled, and the neighbourhood was calm by Monday morning.
Locals described the attack as the first time their community had been directly targeted. Maiduguri has seen fewer attacks in recent years, with the last major incident in 2021 when mortars fired by Boko Haram killed 10 people.
The military has yet to release a formal statement.
