National Single Window set to cut red tape and lower port costs

Nigeria Launches Digital Trade Platform to Boost Efficiency

Nigeria is preparing to launch the first phase of its National Single Window platform, a major digital reform aimed at streamlining import and export processes and improving trade efficiency.

Trade Minister Jumoke Oduwole described the initiative as a “game changer,” highlighting its potential to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and lower operational costs for businesses. The platform will go live on Friday, initially connecting one port and one shipping line.

Designed as a centralized electronic system, the National Single Window will simplify trade procedures and enhance coordination among agencies—an essential step for Africa’s largest economy as it seeks to strengthen its global trade position.

The project is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader reform agenda, which includes fiscal and tax restructuring aimed at driving economic growth.

Officials say improving port efficiency could deliver a strong multiplier effect by boosting trade balances and increasing foreign exchange earnings. Currently, high logistics costs remain a major challenge, with transporting goods within Lagos significantly more expensive than in comparable African economies.

While the reform marks a key milestone, authorities acknowledge that external factors—particularly geopolitical tensions in the Middle East—could affect global markets and investor confidence.

The platform is expected to play a crucial role in modernizing Nigeria’s trade infrastructure and attracting increased investment in the long term.
