Expanded collaboration reflects growing regional alignment and South-South cooperation ambitions

Niger and Morocco Deepen Strategic Partnership with 14 Cooperation Agreements

Niger and Morocco have strengthened their bilateral relations by signing 14 cooperation agreements during the 5th session of their joint commission held in Niamey. The meeting gathered senior officials and experts from both countries to advance collaboration across key strategic sectors.

The agreements cover a broad spectrum, including transport, vocational training, trade, industry, agriculture, housing, youth development, and justice. Among the notable provisions is a framework for the transfer of convicted persons, highlighting deeper legal and institutional cooperation.

Niger’s Foreign Minister Yaou Bakary Sangaré emphasized Morocco’s continued support, particularly following the country’s 2023 political transition, pointing to enhanced cooperation in finance, energy, agriculture, and security.

He also praised the 2025 initiative launched by Mohammed VI, aimed at improving access for Sahel countries—such as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—to the Atlantic Ocean via Moroccan ports, including Tangier and Casablanca. The initiative is viewed as a strategic effort to boost regional trade connectivity and economic sovereignty.

Following talks with Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani, Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to strengthening ties, conveying the King’s continued support for Niger and its people.

This development highlights a growing alliance between the two nations, aligned with broader efforts to enhance regional integration, sovereignty, and South-South cooperation across the Sahel and North Africa.
