US ultimatum and Iranian defiance keep Gulf tensions high

Mediators Push 45-Day Ceasefire Plan

Pakistani, Egyptian, and Turkish mediators have drafted a proposal urging the US and Iran to agree to a 45-day ceasefire and ease restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The plan is meant to buy time for talks toward a permanent truce, but neither side has yet responded.

The push comes after US President Donald Trump threatened strikes on Iran’s critical infrastructure if Tehran does not reopen the strait. Over the weekend, Trump posted expletive-laden threats on social media, while Iran vowed the strait would “never return” to pre-war conditions for the US and Israel.

Meanwhile, fighting continues: US and Israeli airstrikes killed the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Monday, and Iranian missiles struck targets in Israel and Gulf states. In Haifa, a missile hit a residential building, killing several people. Civilians across the region remain caught in the escalating violence.
