Jihadists and separatists join forces as rebels claim Kidal

Mali Defence Minister Killed in Coordinated Attacks

Mali has been hit by a series of large and coordinated attacks that killed the country’s defence minister, Sadio Camara. The attacks were carried out by a combination of jihadist fighters and separatist rebels, marking a serious escalation in the country’s ongoing conflict.

The violence took place across several places, including the capital Bamako and northern near Kidal. According to authorities, Camara was wounded during an attack on his home involving a suicide car bomber and armed fighters. He later died in hospital.

At the same time, rebel groups claim they have taken control of Kidal, a key northern city that has long been a symbol of the separatist movement. Government forces and their allies reportedly withdrew from the area, raising concerns about who now controls the area.

What makes this situation especially significant is that two groups separatist rebels and fighters linked to al-Qaeda worked together in these attacks for the first time. This new alliance allowed them to strike multiple targets across the country at once.

Mali has been struggling with insecurity for years, facing both extremist groups and separatist movements. In recent years, the military government has also relied on support from Russia, but these latest attacks have raised questions about how effective that support really is.

Although the government says the situation is now under control, this attacks highlight how unstable things remain not just in Mali, but across the wider West African region.
