Ongoing pay dispute leads to cancellations and tensions with unions

Lufthansa Strike Disrupts Thousands of Flights

A major strike by pilots at Lufthansa continued into another day, causing widespread disruption across Germany’s busiest airports.

At Frankfurt Airport, around 650 out of 1,300 flights were canceled, while at Munich Airport, more than 400 of 915 flights were scrapped. The strike has affected tens of thousands of passengers, with cancellations piling up over several days.

The walkout involves pilots from Lufthansa’s main operations, as well as its cargo and regional branches. The dispute over pay and working conditions shows no clear progress, according to the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit.

In response, Lufthansa announced cost-cutting steps, including removing older regional jets from its subsidiary CityLine’s schedule due to high operating costs. However, the union strongly criticized this move, saying it harms employees and could weaken Germany’s role as a major aviation hub.

Union leader Andreas Pinheiro argued that the airline’s actions may be linked to ongoing labor disputes rather than purely financial reasons.

Overall, the situation reflects rising tensions between airline management and workers, with no immediate resolution in sight and continued disruption expected for travelers.
