Kenya's foreign minister took off for a visit to Moscow on Sunday in a bid to put a stop to the recruitment of Kenyans to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Musalia Mudavadi, the foreign minister of Kenya, has travelled to Moscow in an effort to halt the recruitment of Kenyan nationals into the Russia–Ukraine War.
During the visit, Mudavadi is expected to hold talks with senior officials from Russia, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to a statement from Kenya’s foreign ministry.
The discussions will focus on securing the safe repatriation of Kenyans who reportedly travelled to Russia after being promised well-paid civilian jobs but later found themselves deployed on the front lines of the conflict.
Kenyan intelligence estimates suggest that more than 1,000 Kenyan nationals may have died after becoming involved in the war.
The Kenyan government also hopes to negotiate an agreement that would allow its citizens easier access to legitimate employment opportunities in Russia while ensuring safe working conditions for those living abroad.
Officials say the talks are part of broader efforts by Nairobi to protect Kenyan citizens overseas and ensure they can work and live in safe and dignified environments.
The issue has also affected other African countries. In February, South Africa secured the return of 15 citizens who said they had been trapped in fighting in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
