The Kenya Revenue Authority said the cameras are a powerful deterrent against corruption and footage will ensure faster dispute resolution.
Kenya has introduced body-worn cameras for customs and border control officers as part of efforts to improve transparency and facilitate legitimate trade and travel.
The initiative, announced by the Kenya Revenue Authority, will involve the deployment of 350 body cameras at border posts and major entry points, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, one of Africa’s busiest transport hubs.
Officials say the devices will help deter corruption and improve accountability by recording interactions between officers and travellers. The recorded footage is also expected to assist in resolving disputes more quickly.
The rollout comes amid ongoing concerns about bribery and collusion among some border officials, which have been blamed for facilitating tax evasion and smuggling activities.
According to local reports, the cameras are equipped with real-time GPS tracking, secure recording systems and live-streaming capabilities, allowing supervisors to monitor operations and review incidents when necessary.
