“Mata Zalla” empowers women through safer travel and economic opportunity
A women-only transport initiative in Kano is reshaping urban mobility while promoting safety and economic inclusion for women.
Known as Mata Zalla—meaning “women only” in Hausa—the project runs a fleet of pink electric tuktuks operated exclusively by female drivers and reserved for female passengers. Launched in 2024 by Mata Zalla Cooperative Society and led by Hajiya Hauwa Ahmad Tarauni, the initiative addresses long-standing concerns over discomfort in mixed-gender public transport.
In a city where transport systems are often crowded and loosely regulated, the service provides a culturally appropriate solution, particularly within a Muslim-majority context. The pink vehicles have become a visible symbol of both safety and solidarity.
Beyond transportation, the program is driving economic empowerment by training women—especially widows and divorced individuals—to work as drivers in a sector traditionally dominated by men. While over 200 women have been trained, only about 100 have received vehicles due to limited resources.
Through a three-year loan scheme, participants can earn a livelihood while gradually repaying the cost of their vehicles, enabling long-term financial independence.
Although initially met with skepticism, sustained awareness campaigns and community engagement have improved public acceptance. Organizers now call for greater investment to expand the initiative nationwide and extend its benefits to more women.
