Controversial South African opposition leader faces potential jail term amid political tensions and international attention.

Julius Malema Supporters Rally Ahead of Sentencing in Firearm Case

Hundreds of supporters of Julius Malema gathered in the city of East London ahead of his expected sentencing in a high-profile firearm case. Dressed in the signature red of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), demonstrators marched to the courthouse in a show of solidarity.

Malema was found guilty in October of violating firearm laws after discharging an assault rifle during a political rally in 2018. Prosecutors are seeking the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, with final arguments and sentencing expected shortly.

The case was initiated by AfriForum, a controversial organization that has also drawn international attention to Malema’s rhetoric, including raising concerns with Donald Trump.

The EFF has strongly rejected the charges, framing the case as politically motivated and an attempt to silence one of the country’s most outspoken opposition figures. Malema is widely known for his provocative speeches, including his use of the anti-apartheid chant “Kill the Boer,” which remains a subject of intense debate.

While critics argue the chant incites racial tensions, South African courts have ruled that it does not constitute hate speech when considered within its historical context tied to the anti-apartheid struggle, which ended in 1994.

Amid heavy police presence, the unfolding case highlights deep political divisions in South Africa, where issues of race, history, and free expression continue to shape public discourse.
