Secret cabinet decision raises fears over future of Palestinian statehood
Israeli media reports say Israel’s Security Cabinet has secretly approved the creation of 34 new settlements in the occupied West Bank—the largest number reportedly approved in a single meeting.
If confirmed, this would bring the total number of settlements approved under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government since late 2022 to 103.
The reported new settlements include areas inside Palestinian neighborhoods and remote regions in the northern West Bank. According to the report, officials kept the move secret to avoid pressure from the United States during the conflict involving Iran.
Settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem has long been one of the most controversial issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The international community, including the United Nations, considers these settlements illegal under international law.
Today, around 750,000 Israeli settlers live across the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Palestinian leaders warn that continued expansion could lead to full Israeli annexation of the territory and destroy hopes for an independent Palestinian state.
The issue gained further legal attention in 2024 when the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the removal of settlements.
Overall, the reported decision is likely to deepen tensions and further complicate already fragile prospects for peace in the region.
