Transgender women excluded as global debate over fairness and inclusion intensifies
The International Olympic Committee has adopted a major policy shift, excluding transgender women from female Olympic events ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Under the new framework, eligibility for women’s competitions will be limited to biological females, confirmed through a one-time genetic test. The move aligns with broader political dynamics, including positions linked to Donald Trump, and is presented as a measure to safeguard fairness and competitive integrity.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry stressed that marginal physical differences can determine outcomes at elite levels, underscoring the need to protect fairness and safety in women’s sport.
The updated rules also impact athletes with differences in sex development (DSD), including Caster Semenya, tightening participation criteria across female categories.
Although the policy will not apply retroactively or to grassroots sports, it represents a decisive break from previous practices where international federations set their own eligibility standards.
The decision is likely to fuel ongoing global discussions, as the Olympic movement navigates the complex balance between inclusion and competitive fairness.
