Idrissa Gueye challenges CAF decision as disputed final reshapes African football narrative

AFCON Title Controversy Sparks Senegal-Morocco Tensions

Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye has strongly contested the Confederation of African Football’s decision to strip his team of their Africa Cup of Nations title, insisting the victory was earned on the pitch despite the official reversal in favour of Morocco.

Senegal had originally secured a 1-0 extra-time win in the final held in Rabat. However, CAF later sanctioned the team for a 15-minute walk-off during the match, overturning the result and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory and the championship.

Reacting to the ruling, Gueye described the decision as unjust, emphasizing that titles should be decided through performance on the field rather than administrative rulings. In a conciliatory tone, he also stated he would be willing to return the medals if it could help ease diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

The controversy stems from a dramatic moment late in the match, when Senegal players temporarily left the field in protest against a disputed penalty awarded to Morocco. The situation created confusion before play resumed, with Morocco ultimately missing the penalty and Senegal securing victory in extra time.

Despite his criticism of CAF’s decision, Gueye also questioned his federation’s choice to appeal the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, suggesting that prolonging the dispute may not be the best path forward.

The incident has sparked broader debate over governance, fairness, and the integrity of competition in African football.
