Guinea Considers Export Quotas as Bauxite Prices Slide

Guinea, the leading global producer of bauxite, is reportedly considering export quotas for mining companies as early as this month, according to sources familiar with the discussions. The move comes as global bauxite prices have fallen 20–35% from last year’s highs and freight costs rise, partly due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Guinea’s bauxite exports rose 25% in 2025, with over 70% shipped to China, making the country responsible for around 40% of global bauxite production. While officials are still assessing details, any export quotas would likely target large producers, according to industry insiders.

The government has also been aggressively reforming the mining sector, which holds significant reserves of iron ore, gold, and lithium, to ensure better revenue collection.

Experts note that other African nations are also tightening controls on commodities, introducing export restrictions, higher royalties, and domestic processing requirements to maximize earnings amid fluctuating global markets.
