Controversial bill sparks protests and political tension in France
Aly Diouara, a member of La France Insoumise, announced that the Palestinian flag was raised at city hall in La Courneuve as a symbolic response to a controversial proposed law.
The municipality said the decision was meant to defend freedom of expression, as debates around the bill intensified in French National Assembly.
The proposed law, introduced by Caroline Yadan, aims to combat new forms of antisemitism. It includes measures such as penalizing denial of a state's existence and comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany.
However, critics—including opposition groups and students—argue that the bill could limit free speech and unfairly target supporters of Palestine or critics of the Israeli government.
Public reaction has been strong. A petition opposing the bill gathered over 700,000 signatures, but lawmakers decided not to move it forward for full parliamentary debate.
The situation highlights growing tensions in France over balancing the fight against hate speech with protecting freedom of expression.
