UN envoy warns crisis remains “catastrophic” despite fragile ceasefire

France Urges Israel to Lift Gaza Aid Barriers

France has called on Israel to remove all barriers blocking humanitarian aid into Gaza, warning that conditions there remain extremely severe.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, France’s envoy Jérôme Bonnafont said the ceasefire is fragile and the humanitarian crisis is still “catastrophic.” He urged Israel to ensure safe access for aid deliveries, protect UN workers, and allow medical evacuations supported by the World Health Organization.

In simple terms, France is saying that not enough has improved on the ground, even months after a peace plan was introduced. It wants immediate, visible changes to help civilians and begin rebuilding efforts.

France also stressed that the militant group Hamas must be disarmed, stating that it should not play a role in Gaza’s future. At the same time, it reaffirmed support for a two-state solution as the only long-term path to peace.

Beyond Gaza, France raised concerns about rising tensions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, criticizing settlement expansion and violence against Palestinians.

The country also pointed to wider regional risks, including tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, and welcomed early steps toward calm between Israel and Lebanon.

Overall, France is pushing for urgent humanitarian relief, political progress, and long-term stability in a region still facing multiple overlapping crises.
