Lawmakers slam resale market as fans priced out of final

FIFA Faces Outrage Over $2.3M World Cup Tickets

The global football body FIFA is facing backlash after a handful of resale tickets for the World Cup final in the United States were listed at nearly $2.3 million each.

The match, set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium, includes these ultra-expensive seats located behind the goal in the lower tier. Even the “cheapest” resale options are far from affordable—around $11,000 for upper-level seats.

FIFA says it does not set resale prices directly, but it does take a 15% fee from both buyers and sellers, which has added to the controversy. The organization argues that these fees are standard and that revenue from the tournament is redistributed to support football development worldwide.

Still, criticism is growing. Some U.S. lawmakers have already called on FIFA to reduce prices, arguing that the event is becoming too exclusive and leaving ordinary fans behind.

In simple terms, while the World Cup is meant to be a global celebration of football, these extreme ticket prices are making it feel more like a luxury event than a sport for everyone.
