Airports may face supply crisis if Strait of Hormuz trade is not restored soon

Europe Warned of Possible Jet Fuel Shortage

European airports could begin facing serious jet fuel shortages within three weeks if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz does not return to normal, according to a new report.

The warning came from Airports Council International Europe, which told the European Commission that fuel reserves across Europe are dropping and that airports could soon experience a “systemic shortage.”

The disruption is linked to the recent conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—a key route for global oil and fuel supplies.

As a result:

  • Jet fuel prices have more than doubled since before the war

  • Global jet fuel costs rose 110% in just over a month

  • Some airports in Italy have already started limiting jet fuel use

Europe is especially vulnerable because it relies heavily on fuel imports from the Gulf region. Airlines are warning that if the crisis continues, summer travel across Europe could be disrupted, with possible delays, cancellations, or higher ticket prices.

Overall, aviation leaders say restoring fuel shipments quickly is critical to avoid a wider transportation and economic problem.
