UN highlights new warfare tactics and deepening humanitarian crisis

Escalating Violence in Eastern DR Congo Raises Global Alarm

The United Nations has sounded the alarm over intensifying violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where evolving military tactics and a worsening humanitarian situation are placing millions of civilians at risk.

Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Vivian van de Perre of MONUSCO warned of the growing use of offensive drones and GPS jamming in urban centers. Incidents reported near Bangoka Airport in Kisangani and in Goma underscore mounting threats to civilian infrastructure.

Monitoring challenges are compounding the crisis, with restricted access hindering investigations into abuses. In areas controlled by the M23, journalists and human rights defenders reportedly face intimidation and arbitrary detention.

The humanitarian toll continues to rise, with food insecurity expected to impact 26.6 million people—nearly a quarter of the population.

At the diplomatic level, Kinshasa has intensified accusations against Rwanda, alleging support for M23 operations. Zénon Ngay Mukongo described the situation as a serious breach of sovereignty, citing civilian casualties and widespread displacement.
