UNHCR confirms closure, activists allege coercion

Burundian Refugees Evicted as Tanzania Closes Camp

Thousands of Burundian refugees have been repatriated from Tanzania’s Nduta camp, which was shut down this week under a government deal with Burundi. Activists say the last 3,000 residents were forcibly removed, with reports of night‑time violence, arrests, and demolition of homes. Only a few families remain, awaiting transfer to Nyarugusu camp, itself slated for closure in June. The UN refugee agency confirmed the shutdown, stressing that returns must be voluntary, safe, and dignified, though critics accuse UNHCR of enabling coercive practices. Tanzania had hosted more than 140,000 Burundian refugees, many displaced by years of conflict and repression. The closures mark a turning point in regional refugee policy, raising alarm among rights groups about the fate of those forced back into unstable conditions.
