At UNGA, Trump threatens Iran, touts Ukraine deal, calls ICC 'rogue', renames AI as 'SI'

US President Donald Trump has said he believes a deal with Iran will be reached shortly after the upcoming US election, while warning that Tehran would be driven "into hell" if no agreement is reached, in remarks made at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.

"Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?" Trump said on Tuesday.

"I believe we'll make a deal right after the election because it doesn't make sense for them not to. They're waiting to see how I do in the midterm election," Trump said, adding that he is not running and will not let the election affect his Iran policy.

Trump said he had opened negotiations with Iran upon taking office, offering "economic cooperation" in exchange for Tehran ending its nuclear programme, but that Iran had "absolutely refused" the offer at the time.

He reiterated that Iran would never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon and called on all nations to isolate Iran economically.

Trump described Iran's government as “weak and desperate".

Russia-Ukraine war

Trump mentioned that a deal between Russia and Ukraine to end the war could be reached in the near future.

"We're working very closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, and we will get that one done. It's going to happen, I think, more quickly than people understand. They've had it," Trump said.

He earlier told reporters at the United Nations General Assembly that his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin was to "settle the war".

Trump is later expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and will also take part in a trilateral signing ceremony to formalise a new Greenland security agreement, according to the White House.

Latin America

The US president said a deal involving Venezuelan oil was "starting to perk right now", adding that some of the world's biggest oil companies were entering the country.

Trump also said Mexico was the epicentre of drug cartel violence, adding that the country had to reclaim control of its territory.

Turning to Cuba, Trump told the UN that the country "will fall".

"My administration is also seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba, where the communist regime is under great pressure, the biggest pressure they've ever been under. It's an absolutely failed state; it's failing like never before, and it will fall," Trump said.

Greenland

He said the US will develop a “large military presence” in Greenland, including two major military bases, and an agreement will be signed Tuesday.

ICC

Trump called for all nations that are part of the International Criminal Court to quit the body, calling it "out of control".

"The United States is equally opposed to the out-of-control institution known as the International Criminal Court," he said at the UN.

"I call on all nations that are members of the ICC to officially resign from this rogue institution immediately," he added.

AI or SI

Trump said US government documents would use "super intelligence (SI)" going forward instead of artificial intelligence and repeated his previous calls about AI warnings being a hoax.

"From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world's, will be changed to use the much more accurate term 'super' as opposed to artificial. So it's super intelligence," Trump said.

"I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," he said.
