Ankara to Implement “Red Zone” Security Measures for 2026 NATO Summit

According to information obtained by Anadolu Agency (AA), Türkiye is implementing comprehensive security measures in preparation for the 36th NATO Summit to be held in Ankara on July 7-8.

Areas surrounding Esenboğa Airport, the summit venue, protocol routes, and hotels hosting international delegations will be designated as “red zones.” Access to these areas will be subject to strict security controls for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Authorities have also announced that demonstrations and public marches will not be permitted in Ankara between July 1 and July 15 as part of summit security preparations.

Approximately 40,000 police officers and gendarmerie personnel are expected to be deployed throughout the summit period, supported by plainclothes security officers. In addition to Ankara’s existing City Security Management System cameras, advanced surveillance equipment will be installed at around 100 critical locations.

Enhanced security measures will be implemented at Esenboğa Airport and along major transportation corridors. Entry controls at Ankara’s access points will also be tightened.

Turkish authorities are coordinating with international partners to prevent individuals identified as potential security risks from entering the capital during the summit period.

Preparations are being carried out based on participation scenarios similar to last year’s NATO gathering, which attracted approximately 6,000 attendees.

The Ministry of Interior previously held a high-level security meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi to review all aspects of the summit’s security planning.
