Algeria and Benin joined growing international condemnation of the terrorist attack on Niger's main airport.
Algeria and Benin have strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted Diori Hamani International Airport and a nearby military airbase in Niger's capital, Niamey, on Thursday, while expressing solidarity with the Nigerien government and people.
Algeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, denounced the attack and expressed its "strong condemnation and deep denunciation" of the assault, reaffirming Algeria's full solidarity with Niger.
“In this painful circumstance, Algeria reaffirms its full solidarity with the Nigerien people and government in the face of this heinous attack, which aims to undermine the security and stability of brotherly Niger,” the statement posted on X read.
The North African nation also reiterated its support for Nigerien authorities in their fight against terrorism and pledged to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation to confront threats to peace and security across the region.
Benin reaffirms solidarity
Benin also reacted to the attack, describing it as an unacceptable act of aggression against a strategic civilian facility.
In a statement, the Beninese government strongly condemned the armed assault on Diori Hamani International Airport, saying the attack deliberately endangered civilian lives and threatened national security.
"Benin reaffirms its solidarity with the brotherly Nigerien people, President Abdourahamane Tiani, and the authorities of the Republic of Niger. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families while recalling the deep ties of brotherhood and friendship that unite our two nations," the statement said.
Cotonou said its message of support reflects the enduring historical and fraternal ties between the two neighbouring countries.
Attempted airport breach
The attack, which occurred at dawn, triggered intense clashes involving heavy weaponry after terrorists reportedly breached the airport perimeter. The incident has revived memories of a similar attempted incursion in January.
Twenty-two attackers were killed in Niger and around 20 suspects arrested following an assault on Thursday against the Niamey International Airport, according to a provisional toll released by the defence ministry.
Authorities reported that 11 members of the defence and security forces were killed, along with two civilians.
Four people were injured during the attack.
Al Qaeda-linked JNIM terrorist group said it had carried out "a suicide attack" on Diori Hamani international airport and on a neighbouring military base.
