Gunmen killed 20 people and stole cattle from a village in central Nigeria in a "bandit" attack, a local development organisation said on Saturday.
At least 20 people were killed in central Nigeria on Friday when armed “bandits” attacked a village in Plateau State, Nigeria, the Kanam Development Association (KADA) reported on Saturday.
The gunmen ambushed soldiers on a routine patrol, leading to an exchange of fire that claimed 12 security personnel and eight community members who had joined in defense. After the attack, the assailants raided a nearby community and stole property, including cattle.
Bandit attacks, often involving mass kidnappings for ransom and looting, are common in the region. KADA noted that villages in the area have faced repeated attacks in recent years, compounding the hardships of vulnerable rural communities.
Despite increased government efforts to combat criminal groups, including terrorists and bandits, insecurity continues to plague northern and central Nigeria.
